Mandatory Advising for

First-Year Freshmen who entered

in FALL 2011 and are now in their second semester.

Part 5 - Registration for Next Semester

In this final part of the Mandatory Advising Workshop, we will review a familiar subject, class registration.

Fall 2012 Registration

While  our registration system  is familiar, it won't be as easy, perhaps, as your previous two semesters' registration experiences. When you were a freshman, we gave you “Early Registration” so that you could take certain classes in your first year. Now, you are going to be second-year students and will register later than before. You might feel like you are the last person to register!

You'll have two times to register: Early Priority Registration, during which you will register for up to 8 units and Final Priority Registration during which you will be allowed to register for up to 16 units.

Therefore, you will  need to strategize carefully about what are your TWO TOP CHOICES for Early Priority Registration!

What you have learned in the Advising Workshop's previous parts is going to assist you in preparing. We rely on you to be a critical thinker at this point. While advisors exist to help you with major and other requirements, they expect you to come having thought about registering for classes, and have some decisions made. Please do not expect advisors to simply tell you what to do.

Early Priority Registration will occur April 30-May 11. Watch your e-mail for announcements about Priority Registration. You will be directed to your mySFSU website to check for holds and registration times.

NEWS ABOUT TUIION!
To register for early priority registration, you do NOT  have to pay for tuition ahead of time! The fee payment deadline for tuition will be July 12, 2012.  So you may register for up to 8 units without prepaying, and then pay before your Final Priority Date in July-August, 2012.

Remember, if you watch your email and keep checking MySFSU, you will learn about this news.

Registration Holds

About holds… it is very important that you not have any holds which bar you from using Early Priority Registration, if you can help it. One hold which will be addressed now is your Mandatory Advising Hold. Once you take and pass the quiz that accompanies this workshop, that hold will be cleared. We have put the workshop website and quiz up early, so that you can do this well in advance of registration in May.

Do you owe money to housing or do you sleep you have fines, such as library etc? A tip: check your MySFSU frequently, between now and May, to make sure that you have no holds or problems.

Remediation hold:

Please view our link about remediation.
It is meant for students who:

  • - are re-taking math 60 in spring
  • - are taking and failing MATH 70, ENG 105, ENG 202 or 204, or
  • - received a W in ENG 104 in Fall 2011 or never took English in 1st year.

For those of you who have remediation holds, you will receive an e-mail/Letter from our office with instructions.
Unfortunately, if you have a remedial hold, you will not be allowed to return to the university until you have passed the the appropriate English and/or math course. Once you complete the course, contact new student programs office to be able to return to San Francisco State.

Recap:

To review, here are the most important tips about registration. Good luck!
Check your MySFSU frequently.
Make sure your financial aid issues are all addressed.
If you are planning to see an advisor, see one early or plan to wait in line.
Check your e-mail from the University daily.
Watch the Bursars website frequently for the latest information on tuition and deadlines.

You may now take the quiz. Please carefully review this workshop before taking the quiz. You must pass the quiz with a high score in order to clear your hold.
