Part 3 - Prerequisites

Prerequisites Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is it okay to take a class and its prerequisite at the same time?

No. The prerequisite must be taken and passed first.

I want to take a class and that prerequisite is in progress, is it okay to add the class?

Yes. Assuming you pass the prerequisite, you are completely qualified for the course.

What does the prerequisite “Junior standing” mean?

It means that by the time you start the course which requires junior standing, you will have earned at least 60 semester units. Sometimes,
Gator Registration requires you to have 60 units in order to add the course.

If the Bulletin says “priority given to majors”, but I am not in that major, can I add the class if there are seats available?

Gator Registration will block you from adding a course with a major prerequisite. You may attempt to add later, during Open Registration, but
you won't qualify for the class, and the teacher could give the seat to a student in that major.

If a course has the prerequisite “ELM score 50 and above,” and I have an ELM exemption, can I add the course?

Yes. You qualify.

If a course has the prerequisite of ENG 114, and I passed ENG 104/105, can I take the course?

Yes. You qualify because ENG 106 is equal to ENG 114.

If a course has the prerequisite of ENG 214, and I passed ENG 104/105, can I take the course?
NO. ENG 104/105 is equal to English 114. You still need to take ENG 214.

If a course has the prerequisite of ENG 114, and I passed a community college English composition, can I take the course?

Yes, but be prepared to bring proof of that to class. Preferably, bring a DARS report to class which shows you have passed an ENG 114 equivalent.

If I passed Advanced Placement English with a score of 3 or above, can I take a course which has an ENG 214 prerequisite?

Yes. Once you have your official College Board transcript sent to admissions, your DARS report will show you have met both ENG 114 and 214.

If I passed the International Baccalaureate (IB) English test, high-level, can I take a course which has a ENG 214 prerequisite?

Yes. Once you have your official I B certificate sent to Admissions, your DARS report will show you have met both ENG 114 and 214.

If I do not have the prerequisite and the teacher allows me to stay in the course, is that okay?

Yes you have instructor consent. However, for majors, sometimes the prerequisite is still required for the major. So taking it out of sequence will not benefit you in the long run. We suggest you consult with a major advisor.

If I am in a course for which I do not have the prerequisite, and I pass the class, will the class count?

It depends on the requirement. For example, Segment 3 in General Education, has certain course and unit requirements. If you do not meet them, Segment 3 courses will only count as electives. We suggest you consult with an advsor in the Advising Center.

A course has a co-requisite and I cannot add the co-requisite. Will I have to drop the course?

You should consult with the department which offers the co-requisites. It is possible that they could help you add. In a worse-case scenario, yes, you would have to drop.

I had a course with the prerequisite in progress, but I did not get a C or better in the prerequisite. Will I be able to take the course which requires the prerequisite?

No. Usually a prerequisite means C or better grade. If you fail to get a C or better, consult with an advisor in that department or ask your professor. Do not assume that because you added the class ,you will be allowed to stay in the class.
