Why SF State..?

It has a great English Department, a phenomenal speech and debate program, and is in a great city. Also, this school is just far enough away from home that I don't feel smothered but also close enough that I can come home when I need to.

Your plans after graduation...

I am planning a career as a high school English teacher. There is an achievement gap with African American students that I would like to help close. Also, there aren't too many African American male English teachers in general. I want to break boundaries and go where I am needed. I plan to become a full-time teacher and speech and debate coach for the largest team in the nation at James Logan High in Union City. I also plan to complete graduate work in speech communication.

Favorite class so far...

First and foremost, Professor [Michael] Krasny's course, Contemporary Literature: 1960 to the Present, has been my favorite because it focuses on a breadth of authors, whose contributions to their genres has [likely] had an impact on every reader's life. Professor Krasny's lectures are energetic, interesting and clever day in and day out. There's never a dull moment.

Extracurricular activities...

I am an active member of the speech and debate program. Last year I placed fifth in the nation and I hope to surpass my achievements from last year this season. The [speech and debate] program at State is easily the best in Northern California, and one of the most open-minded programs in the nation. The program has a great coaching staff with a commitment to excellence.

Favorite place to relax on campus...

I find relaxing is easiest in the [Student Support Services] tutoring lab or in the Cesar Chavez Student Center. Both places are essential to finishing work or catching some Zs.

Favorite book...

My favorite novel to date is easily 'Mrs. Dalloway' by Virginia Woolf. Her writing captures the hidden springs of knowledge encapsulated in one day. [It's] a wonderful read, and I recommend it to everyone.

Advice to new students...

Work hard and focus on your goals! Remember there is no substitute for putting passion in all that you do. And don't forget that San Francisco State isn't all San Francisco has to offer -- get out and explore.

Best-kept secret at State...

Our award-winning speech and debate program. This academic program captures what makes SF State and San Francisco great -- an open-minded, progressive and thriving community, full of people with unique perspectives on life. It rocks!
