Students apply in record numbers, as population grows and students increase options for college

SAN FRANCISCO, December 18, 2006 -- San Francisco State University has set fall 2007 undergraduate application deadlines of Jan. 15, 2007, for prospective first-time freshmen and March 15, 2007, for prospective transfer and second baccalaureate students.

Transfer students with at least 60 transferable units and first-time freshmen are eligible for admission.

Fall 2007 graduate applications are due by May 1, 2007. However, certain graduate programs have earlier deadlines and require an additional application. For details, visit: www.sfsu.edu/~gradstdy or call the Division of Graduate Studies at (415) 338-2234.

As of Dec. 1, SF State had received a total of 34,331 applications for fall 2007 admission, an all-time high for the University at this point in the application period. Of those, 25,929 applications were for first-time freshmen admission, a 5.3 percent increase over fall 2006.

Jo Volkert, associate vice president for enrollment planning and management, attributes the increase in applications to the growing population of high school graduates in California. She also noted that more prospective students apply to several four-year universities nowadays, providing themselves with more options.

"There is now awareness that applicants have to spread their options around," Volkert said. "With more options, however, students are taking longer to make their decisions [on where to attend college]. I recommend that they make their decision by the national decision date of May 1. This will give them a chance to better prepare for college life, become familiar with the campus and enroll for classes early."

For more details on SF State undergraduate admissions, majors and degree programs, costs, financial aid, on-campus housing and student life, visit: www.sfsu.edu/prospect, call (415) 338-2355 or send an e-mail to: outreach@sfsu.edu. Call (415) 338-2234 for graduate admissions.

Prospective students interested in on-campus housing are encouraged to submit a housing application before being admitted to SF State, as space is limited and applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. For details, call (415) 338-1067 or visit: www.sfsu.edu/~housing.
