The primary mission of the Graduate College of Education is to develop and maintain rigorous professional preparation in pedagogical and clinical skills required for effective services to individuals of all ages and their families, especially those living in ethnically and racially diverse communities. All programs focus on excellence in teaching and clinical services and are committed to research and scholarship on integrating services to schools and community agencies.

 

Six themes are reflected in the programs and activities of the Graduate College of Education:

  • Preparing professional educators and service providers sensitive to and effective in working with individuals of all ages that are diverse in culture language, learning styles, abilities, sensory and physical challenges, ethnicity, and sexual orientation in schools and other community settings.
  • Providing integrated education and community services.
  • Using technology to improve education and community services.
  • Preparing socially committed educational leaders and advocates.
  • Contributing to the knowledge base in the profession, particularly in urban education.
  • Supporting faculty in pursuit of individual discipline-focused activities and interdisciplinary program planning, teaching, and research.

In order to carry out the mission and vision of the college as reflected in these six themes, the Graduate College of Education offers certificates, credentials, masters’ degrees in education (in specific disciplines), doctorates in education and philosophy degrees (jointly with UC, Berkeley).
