Degrees
SF State offers three types of undergraduate degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Music
- Bachelor of Science
SF State offers 13 master's and doctorate degrees:
- Master of Arts
- Master of Business Administration
- Master of Fine Arts
- Master of Music
- Master of Public Administration
- Master of Public Health
- Master of Science
- Master of Social Work
- Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership
- Doctor of Philosophy in Education
- Doctor of Physical Therapy (Joint Doctorate)
Majors
SF State offers bachelor's degrees 77 academic areas with 48 areas of concentrations, master's in 63 academic areas with 41 areas of concentrations, and a doctorate in educational leadership. Programs offered jointly with University of California campuses include a Ph.D. in education with a concentration in special education with UC Berkeley, and a clinical doctorate, Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) with UC San Francisco. In addition, SF State offers 16 credential programs and 41 certificate programs.
As an undergraduate, if you want to specialize in one field, you can select a single major. If you have more than one main interest, you can choose either a double major or a major and a minor. With the help of you advisor, you can also design a special major that draws on courses from a variety of fields.
Some majors are identified as impacted or high demand majors. When declaring a major, be sure to determine whether or not there are special requirements to enter that major. Such majors require that students meet specific prerequisites before gaining admission. For graduate programs, check with the academic department in which you are interested for specific application requirements.
Minors
Like an academic major, a minor is a focused area of study; however, a minor does not require as many units. SF State offers a variety of minors. Most majors do not require completion of a minor to earn the degree. Currently, only the jounalism major requires a minor.
Credentials
SF State offers credential programs for prospective teachers, counselors, and other education specialists.
Certificates
Certificate programs are coherent sets of courses that do not lead to an academic degree but that are oriented toward particular skills or occupations. They usually take less time to complete than a degree.
General Education
In addition to your major area of study, undergraduate students at SF State must fulfill a 48-unit program of General Education requirements (GE). GE classes complement your major area of study and introduce you to the richness and diversity of the arts and sciences.
The GE program will improve your basic skills in writing, speaking, and reasoning; will provide breadth of knowledge in the arts and sciences; and will enable you to relate and apply knowledge from several disciplines to the study of significant topics.
