WHAT: San Francisco State University’s Speech and Debate Team, which has taken home several national championships in recent years, is preparing to compete in a variety of individual events at the 2007 American Forensics Association national tournament next weekend in Minnesota.

Highlights will include:

  • an oral interpretation of excerpts from such notable moments in celebrity justice as the police report of actor Mel Gibson's 2006 drunken driving arrest and court testimony from the Michael Jackson child molestation case, performed by senior Kimmie Sakamoto;
  • an after-dinner speech -- a type of persuasive speech that uses humor -- on competitive eating contests, performed by senior Megan McCallister and accompanied by a plate of miniature hot dogs; and
  • an informative speech by junior Lisa Rau on the modern-day implications of the Mayan calendar end-date, in 2012.

WHO: Four SF State Speech and Debate Team members who will compete in the 2007 American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament.

WHEN: 2:30 - 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 28
