Dr. Perlstein is concerned with the ways schooling reflects both democratic aspirations in American life and diversity and inequality in American society. His work focuses on the institutional and political influences on American education. His interests include urban school reform, teacher organizing, and progressive education. His forthcoming book, Justice, Justice: School Politics and the Eclipse of Liberalism, explores the place of race and class conflicts in American schools. Recent journal publications include "Building a New Deal Community: Progressive Education at Arthurdale," with S. Stack in Schools of Tomorrow, Schools of Today, edited by S. Semel (1997); "Community and Democracy in American Schools: Arthurdale and the Fate of Progressive Education," in Teachers College Record (1996); and "Race and Class Consciousness," in Educational Foundations (1994).
