San Francisco may be the CPTSC conference destination where you will choose to extend your stay and/or bring your family. A favorite travel spot, San Francisco's cityscape is lovely, the population diverse, and the climate mild.
Plus, there are those cable cars, the big red bridge, views of ocean and bay, houses called painted ladies, high hills, crooked streets, ferry boats, foggy dusks and dawns, and other pleasures for sightseers. Nature lovers can hug the redwoods and walk on the beach. Additionally, San Francisco has plenty of street culture, as well as the museum and theatre kind.
Of course, CPTSC members also might be interested in visiting the Bay Area because of its leadership in high-tech industries and its scientific research facilities.

San Francisco State University |
SFSU has been the "the city's university" for over a century, offering over 200 bachelor's and master's degrees in a range of fields, conjoint Ph.D.'s in selected disciplines, and other specialized offerings. Since the 1950s, this diverse and progressive urban university's home has been a self-contained, well-maintained, suburban-style, 106-acre campus in the quiet southwestern corner of the city. Approximately 30,000 students take classes at SFSU, with about one-tenth of those living in residence. SFSU is a non-smoking campus.
The Technical and Professional Writing Program |
TPW is an independently housed program in SFSU's College of Humanities (so not a part of the much larger English Department nor of its Composition Program). Established in the 1980's to offer an interdisciplinary minor and certificate for students aspiring to workplace writing careers, the TPW Program has evolved to offer, as well, the state of California's only bachelor's degree dedicated to technical or professional writing. In 2005, CCCC (Conference on College Composition and Communication) honored the TPW Program with an Award of Excellence.
The Bay Area provides careers for many technical writers, so local practitioner organizations include the six Northern California chapters of the Society for Technical Communication, the Bay Area Publications Managers Forum, and the Northern California Science Writers Association, as well as an active local chapter of the American Medical Writers Association. There also are several regional colleges and university extension programs that offer technical and/or scientific coursework or certificates, including DeAnza College in San Jose; California State University, East Bay; University of California, Santa Cruz; and California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
