GREAT
VISUALS AND SOUND: Team's public showcase event March 28 will feature
dramatic, persuasive, humorous speeches and interpretations on
competitive eating, Mayan calendar, more
WHAT: San Francisco State University’s Speech and Debate Team,
which has taken home several national championships in recent years,
is preparing to compete in a variety of individual events at the 2007
American Forensics Association national tournament next weekend in
Minnesota.
The team will hold its annual Forensics Showcase for the public Wednesday,
March 28. The event features award-winning student speeches that combine
persuasive argumentation with humor and theatre.
Highlights will include:
- an oral
interpretation of excerpts from such notable moments in celebrity justice
as the police report of actor Mel Gibson's 2006 drunken driving
arrest and court testimony from the Michael Jackson child molestation
case, performed by senior Kimmie Sakamoto;
- an after-dinner
speech -- a type of persuasive speech that uses humor -- on competitive
eating contests, performed by senior Megan McCallister
and accompanied by a plate of miniature hot dogs; and
- an informative
speech by junior Lisa Rau on the modern-day implications of the Mayan
calendar end-date, in 2012.
WHO: Four SF State Speech and Debate Team members who will compete in
the 2007 American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament.
