San Francisco -- Painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, video, and mixed media commingle at SF State's Fine Arts Gallery for the 15th Annual Stillwell Student Art Exhibition, opening Tuesday, November 9 and running through Thursday, December 2. The annual exhibition includes juried work from undergraduate students and a selection of work by second year MFA candidates, totaling 60 plus art objects. A small selection of artifacts from Leo Stillwell, Jr., whose memorial scholarship fund is awarded annually to two SFSU art students, is also on view. Join the undergraduate and graduate artists for a reception and awards ceremony on Tuesday, November 9, 4 to 6 p.m. A highlight of the annual Stillwell Show is the exhibition of work by second year MFA students: Steve Bird presents a series of collaged landscape photographs; Shan Chun's digital, projected painting is a "composite of painted and 3-D rendered images;" Jesse Houlding displays printmaking and a video installation; Robbyn Leonard's Falling is video installation with descending cylinder; Terry Marashlian exhibits a two-piece stainless steel sculpture; Marina Shterenberg's nine-panel mixed medium painting explores "the subject of psychological and structural qualities of public architecture;" Daniela Steinsapir's three video installations are "2-D and 3-D animations of my interpretation of the fairy tales, Cinderella, Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood;" Luna Topete's We Never Talk Anymore is a "self-contained installation that recreates a common household bathroom;" and Shadi Yousefian's Duality assembles six color prints mounted on wood panels and is a "self-portrait that shows the restricted Iranian side with a scarf as opposed to the western side with my hair showing. In this piece, I'm in a meditative position contemplating this duality." The SFSU Fine Arts Gallery presents shows that are creative collaborative efforts between students enrolled in the Gallery Exhibition Design Class and the professional gallery staff. For the annual Stillwell Show, undergraduate students of the SFSU Art Department are asked to submit artwork, which is then juried by the exhibition design class. Second year MFA candidates are free to exhibit works of their choice. The 15th Annual Stillwell Student Art Show opens at San Francisco State University's Fine Arts Gallery on Tues., Nov. 9 and runs through Thurs., Dec. 2, 2004. Join the artists on Tues., Nov. 9 for a Reception and Awards Ceremony, 4-6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery. For more information, please call (415) 338-6535. Gallery Information and Parking
