Lucie's Voice

How have increased tuition fees impacted you and your family?:
My name is Lucie and I am a 38 year old adult student attending SFSU full time. I recently returned to school after a hiatus in "real life". I support myself 100%, and do not have a "cushion" of money or a trust fund. I am in the BSN nursing program at SFSU, and the budget/tuition hikes affect me thusly: They force me to have to work more hours in addition to being a single, paying-out-of-pocket, supporting myself financially, student. Instead of being able to focus on my hard won education (the BSN program is nothing to sneeze at!) I now have to work more nights in order to pay rent, pay for school, pay for textbooks, and pay for BART. I urge you to rescind the fee increase for SFSU. Support education, make it affordable, not out of reach. Let's place emphasis on healthy educated constituents and citizens- not people struggling to pay their medical bills and not being able to afford school! Let's re-prioritize our agenda. Education and health of people should be rights, NOT commodities. In order to be a successful Nurse when I graduate from SFSU, I need to be able to study. I need to work less. At this point, the tuition/fee hikes make it so that I need to work more and study less. What sense does this make?? Sincerely, A disgruntled confused full time Nursing student.

What are you studying at SF State and what do you hope to do once you graduate?:
Nursing, BSN for now, with the plan of an MS. I plan to become a Nurse Practitioner and work in low income/at risk communities in a Public Health setting. I want to make a change and a positive impact in the future of our country's healthcare system. As we all know, this system is currently awfully broken- as is our education system. Priorities should be on educating and making sure citizens are healthy.

Lucie O., 38 Berkeley
