How have increased tuition fees impacted you and your family?:
I have to be very careful about what classes I take. Sections of classes I need to take have been closed because there aren't enough students to take them. I only have partial coverage from the 9/11 GI Bill, so I still have to pay 3 or 4 thousand in tuition and fees because I'm also an out of state student. I applied to have my status changed, but I was denied, so I still have to pay high fees. This is the first semester that I've ever taken out student loans. I've managed to make it through college on scholarships so far, but the tuition increases make it more difficult to cover the cost of education.
What are you studying at SF State and what do you hope to do once you graduate?:
MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I will probably deploy to Afghanistan with my unit before I finish my degree, but I plan on teaching English in Japan for the rest of my life, if I can. I joined the military in order to pay for my education, but the benefits get eaten right up by these fee increases. The cost of living in the SF Bay area doesn't make it any easier.
