Proposal #75

Proposal Title:    PC Labs Monitoring without direct student worker or staff involvement

Anticipated Savings/Revenue:

Assuming $8/hour at 40 hours per lab ($1300 per month), this is about $9K per academic year not counting summer. For CHHS having 3 labs and some summer hours in one lab is about $30K per year.

Units affected:

College of Health and Human Services Information Technology Department  has currently implement these and could potentially benefit other units/areas.

Impacted Degrees/Courses: None directly but due to cost savings and faculty efficiency it may.

Brief Description of Proposal:

The use of login system via onecard to access and control access to computers in PC labs. For a lab of 40, the initial cost is about $50 for the hardware and another $35 per unit for the software. Under $4000 to get going, setup time is about 2-3 days for one staff person plus minor maintanance. This access control via it’s magnetic reader checks the encoded magnetic stip on the card. Checks for campus (4 digit code) and the first digit indicates Staff/faulty (1) or student (0), it also can capture student ID number in case the user of the system has to be identified. In addition to this system we also have surveillance camera in our HSS219 lab but it is seldom that we have to view footage. Clearly visible camera and signs indicating camera usage is in progress appears to be a deterrent of crime as well as unacceptable behavior.
