Proposal #46

Proposal Title:     Cross-listed Courses Department Merger

Anticipated Savings/Revenue:  Unknown

Units affected:

Potentially many.  For this example, the Department of Instructional Technology (Education) and the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department (Creative Arts)

Impacted Degrees/Courses: MA in Instructional Technology, BA and MA in Radio and Television

Brief Description of Proposal:

There are many departments that have developed in parallel fashions over the last 30 years.  These programs are likely to have cross-listed courses, share faculty appointments, or even have faculty from one program serving as HRTP committee members in the other program (and visa-versa).  One clear example of which I am aware is the overlap between the Instructional Technology Program in the College of Education and the BECA program in Creative Arts.  These are both resource intensive programs that share curriculum, students, laboratories, and technologies but exist in separate colleges.  In this example there could be substantial savings from removal of duplication of effort, technical support, equipment and laboratory development.  Students would benefit from having a greater range of options from which to select in a combined unit.

I would recommend an analysis of cross-listed courses across the university as a means of identification of easy collaboration.
