Proposal #43

Proposal Title:     Help departments/faculty build own websites

Anticipated Savings/Revenue:  Unknown

Units affected:  All

Impacted Degrees/Courses: Various

Brief Description of Proposal:

SJSU has acquired website building software for the campus that is so simple to use, a senior faculty member who only began using email 2 years ago has built his own website. The program doesn't allow a great deal of variation, so the "look" of the sites is similar for everyone.

Right now, websites for SFSU seem to be built and maintained by a variety of means: Some departments have Chairs/Directors, alumni, students, or office managers who have the skills and do this work, paid or unpaid. The colleges may have technical staff who do this work. D.o.I.T. must do many of these websites.

But persons trained to do this kind of work are expensive! At the department level, they are usually too expensive, which is why others build and maintain the websites.

A simple software solution might help those without money do this better. We do ask our stakeholders to rely on our websites more and more, but that's risky if the sites are not well-maintained.
