Proposal #32
Proposal Title: Reducing # of Colleges
Anticipated Savings/Revenue: $1 million or more
Units affected: All or most colleges, many departments, many faculty
Impacted Degrees/Courses: None?
Brief Description of Proposal:
If the University were to have 7 colleges by, e.g.,
- eliminating Education and distributing departments/programs elsewhere (savings of $500K?)
or if it were to have 6 colleges by, e.g.,
- combining Creative Arts and Humanities (savings of $500K?)
- moving Ethnic Studies into BSS or Humanities (savings of $250K?)
- eliminating BSS and distributing departments/programs in at least 3-4 other colleges (savings of $750K?)
- care would need to be taken that deans chosen to supervise the remaining colleges were (a) able to understand and appreciate
the additional academic programs and faculty and (b) capable of shouldering
the additional burdens without needing to rely on a second associate dean;
- faculty in affected colleges, and elsewhere
across campus, should have the opportunity to pursue an interest in becoming
a member of another department or program where their talents might be put
to better use
- the Development Office would require fewer College Relations Officers and Major Gifts Officers (although it would be useful to have a Major Gifts Officer focusing on such University initiatives as health equity and writing-in-the-disciplines (savings of $200K)
