Proposal #14

Proposal Title:    Creating Learning Communities

Anticipated Savings/Revenue: no idea

Units affected:

Instead of teaching in departments, SFSU will establish learning communities around themes and invite faculty to sign on to those learning communities - themes could be health equity; immigrant rights; creating a just society; abilities and disabilities; understanding/reforming CA politics; critical civic engagement; business ethics; forensics; global studies; etc etc.  The most important innovation would be the breaking down of outdated and impeding disciplinary boundaries, and it would allow faculty to join up in groups where they can actually collaborate on research, and work with people who share their interests.

Impacted Degrees/Courses:

It would impact all departments, and while students would still receive BA or BS but not in departments but in a field such as "social science" or "humanities" or "sciences" - courses would for the most part remain, but they would be grouped differently.

Brief Description of Proposal:

In order to prepare our student body for the 21st century that is responsive to global demands and changes that happen at lightening speed, we need to educate them across disciplines; students can focus on issues or problems that affect our society, and learn from multiple perspectives how those problems can be solved.
