Proposal #11
Proposal Title: Classroom infrastructure upgrades
Anticipated Savings/Revenue: unknown
Units affected: COSE
Impacted Degrees/Courses: In particular, all BA and BS programs in the College of science and engineering.
Brief Description of Proposal:
The university must increase the number of students attending large lecture courses, such as core lower division (and perhaps upper division) classes. This would increase the amount of tuition gained and also help all students matriculate faster. To accomplish this I propose 3 items:
- The university absolutely must build bigger and better lecture halls. This would enable more students to attend classes. It may require remodeling or tearing down walls between existing medium sized classrooms that currently hold only 60-70 students. It might also require 'tent' classrooms similar to the temporary library building.
- The university should videotape important foundation course lectures. This will allow more students to view the lecture (i.e. in another room) and give all students a chance to see the lecture again, or view a lecture missed due to absence. The lecture could also be viewed at another time by another section of students. The university needs to hire staff to do this important job, preferably one staff person in each building on campus.
- The college should offer more night classes. This would draw more students that are working during the day.
