Proposal #1

Proposal Title:     Staff & Faculty Discounted Muni Pass

Anticipated Savings/Revenue:  Unknown

Units affected:  Parking & Transportation, SFMTA/Muni

Impacted Degrees/Courses: None

Brief Description of Proposal:

As many staff and faculty understand, parking on-campus is very affordable, but the popularity makes it very enticing to drive to campus, encourage more pollution, costly gas prices and vehicle maintenance costs, and difficult to find a staff/faculty parking space in lot 19 after 9AM.

We should work with SFMTA/Muni management to have SF State issue bus passes to our staff and faculty at a discounted rate and possibly make some sort of profit or at least cost savings for the campus.  It may be possible to also work with Samtrans since our campus is near the San Mateo County border and their bus lines stop at Daly City BART and Stonestown.

Peralta colleges and Cal utilize discounted passes (AC Transit with the TransLink card) and USF has a pass option for students on Muni.

The benefits: Reducing the impact on the campus garage and neighborhood streets by opening-up more parking spots (more happier Park Merced residents is a plus) and less cars means a cleaner environment.  The more who utilize Muni will require the agency to add more frequent service and reduce demand and maintenance costs on the free campus shuttle.  If students must pay a mandatory fee for a semester pass, the university and Muni makes money regardless if the student uses it daily or never.

I understand Commuter Check is available through Parking & Transportation, but we can cut-out the Commuter Check service charges paid by the university by working directly with the transit agencies.

TransLink RFID transit fare cards are popular with the Peralta and Cal campuses for issuing employee and student passes and can also be used like a debit card to ride other agencies like BART.  Here's why: http://www.actransit.org/riderinfo/easypass/index.wu
