Nielsen appointed director of Romberg Tiburon Center

SF State has appointed Karina Nielsen as the new director of the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies (RTC), effective Aug. 25.

Nielsen, a professor of biology, has taught at Sonoma State University since 2003. She will take over for John Hafernik, who has served as director on an interim basis since the departure of former director Toby Garfield in October 2013.

"Dr. Nielsen is an outstanding scientist and educator as well as a leader on issues of conservation and environmental policy," said Sheldon Axler, dean of the College of Science & Engineering. "I am excited to welcome her as the next director of the Romberg Tiburon Center, and look forward to working with her as she leads the center's continuing efforts to conduct critical marine research and engage with the community on issues surrounding our precious water resources."

As director, Nielsen will oversee all research, fundraising, outreach and operational aspects of the RTC. Her responsibilities will include leading the development of the center's strategic plan; recruiting new faculty and supporting faculty research efforts; promoting and representing the center at the university, local, state and federal levels; and designing and implementing the fundraising strategy.

Nielsen, whose research focus is coastal ecosystems and intertidal organisms, received her bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College and her Ph.D. from Oregon State University. Before arriving at Sonoma State, she was an instructor at the Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State.

"John Hafernik, formerly chair of the biology department, graciously agreed to change his plans and serve as interim director of the Romberg Tiburon Center," Axler said, "He did a magnificent job shepherding RTC through the transition process, and we are all extremely grateful for his skillful leadership during this crucial time."

State Budget News

CSU Chancellor White reported in a June 25 e-mail that the 2014-15 state budget signed by the governor includes an increase of $142.2 million in base funding for the CSU. That increase will enable the CSU to maintain existing programs and services, which will keep student tuition fees stable the fourth consecutive year. Although $95 million less than the Trustees requested, the allocation will also enable campuses to begin to address a backlog of deferred maintenance projects.

White credits -- and thanks -- the CSU community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, labor leaders and supporters who met and corresponded with lawmakers regarding the need to reinvest in the CSU for passage of the funding increase. While the increase is a positive step forward, the CSU has had to turn away more than 25,000 California students, despite a12 percent increase in applications.

The CSU graduates more than 100,000 students into the workforce annually stands ready to do more, but sustained funding is needed to hire more faculty and staff to serve our students, to increase employee compensation in order to recruit and retain the best individuals, and to address facility and infrastructure needs.
