'Comedy Wars' return to SF State

September 12, 2006

Photo of Carol ChanningCarol Channing, known as Broadway's First Lady of Musical Comedy, will headline a lineup of old-school comic superstars for the ninth annual "Veterans of Comedy Wars," a benefit performance that will be held at 8 p.m. this Friday and Saturday at SF State's McKenna Theatre, in the Creative Arts building.

Proceeds benefit the College of Creative Arts and Athletics Department.

Channing won a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 1995 and is internationally renowned for her performances in such musicals as "Hello, Dolly!" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."

Steve Landesberg, Ron Morey and SF State alumni Tom Ammiano and Ronnie Schell -- who founded the event -- will also perform both nights. SF State alum Carter B. Smith, a veteran Bay Area radio DJ, will serve as the backstage announcer.

The Andrew Speight Jazz Ensemble, led by the SF State music lecturer and saxophonist, will provide music.

Tickets are $30, $45 or $60. Tickets can be purchased by phone at (415)338-2467 or online at TicketWeb.
