Faculty experts in broadcast, electronic media available to comment to press

Expertise includes news, media effects on society, ethics, law, pop culture, political debates

SAN FRANCISCO, February 16, 2006 -- Faculty members in the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts (BECA) Department at San Francisco State University are available to comment to the media on topics ranging from broadcast media ethics and law to trends and issues in popular culture.

Professor Betsy Blosser is an expert on the effects of television on society and educational television/media. Blosser is writing a book on television and social change, to be published by Sage Publications. She earned her doctorate in children and television from Stanford University.

Assistant Professor Melissa Camacho is an expert on feminist issues, cultural studies and mass media (with special expertise in television). Camacho, whose dissertation focused on feminist narratives in the popular television drama Law and Order," earned a doctorate in communication arts and sciences from Michigan State University.

Assistant Professor Dina Ibrahim is an expert on Middle Eastern politics and media. Her research focuses on media framing of Arab and American broadcast and satellite media. A former reporter for BBC World Service Radio who has worked in Saudi Arabia, London and Cairo, Ibrahim holds a doctorate in journalism from University of Texas, Austin.

Associate Professor Miriam Smith is an expert on business, management and ethical aspects of the electronic media as well as Internet and intellectual property law. She earned her master's degree in communications management from University of Southern California and her doctor of jurisprudence from Brigham Young University. Before joining SFSU, she practiced entertainment and business law in Los Angeles.

Professor Michelle Wolf is an expert on social effects of mass media and self-concept and sexual identity in the mass media. Her research on body image in the mass media is the subject of a forthcoming book and a documentary that has aired on KQED-Channel 9. She is president of the National Center on Disability and Journalism, a nonprofit that strives to foster fairness, accuracy and diversity in news reporting about the disabled and disability issues. Wolf earned her doctorate in communication/mass communication theory from University of Texas, Austin.

Associate Professor Lena Zhang is an expert on Chinese and Chinese American media, media aesthetics, international and intercultural communication and new media. As director of the SFSU Institute of International Media Communication, Zhang helps coordinate study-abroad programs and visiting professional and academic visitors and delegations from foreign countries. Zhang earned her doctorate in mass communication from University of Georgia, Athens.

The largest and most influential program of its kind in the West, BECA has graduated some of the top names in broadcast journalism, entertainment television and new media, including Bay Area news anchors Ken Bastida and Frank Somerville, Frasier" producer Peter Casey and CNN Headline News anchor Mike Galanos.

BECA faculty members are authors of the most widely used textbooks on radio and television performance, broadcast news writing, television production, electronic field production, and media aesthetics. They have created respected dramatic works and documentaries, edited national academic journals, and contributed to scholarly publications. The department celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
