A Closer Look: 'Dervish' by Lewis deSoto

"Dervish" an installation by Lewis deSoto featuring motorized lights and six different sound tracks

"Dervish" by Lewis deSoto is just one of the works that convinced the Flintridge Foundation to present the SFSU professor of art with a 2003-04 Award for Visual Artists. The biannual Flintridge Awards come with a $25,000 grant and are given to 10 artists from California, Oregon and Washington whose work "demonstrates high artistic merit and a distinctive voice for 20 or more years." More than 900 artists applied for this year's awards. "Dervish" was commissioned by Rafael Tous of Barcelona, Spain, and features six speakers, motorized lights and discrete sound tracks.
