Alumni to celebrate at '50s decade reunion

September 28, 2004

Photo of two feet clad in argyle sox and saddle shoes resting on a deskAlumni who remember dining in the Redwood Room, meeting friends at the 1942 Club and attending the Chicken's Ball are encouraged to put on their poodle skirts and letter sweaters and reminisce with former classmates this Friday at the '50s Decade Reunion.

Hosted by the Alumni Association, the event will take place Friday, Oct. 1, from 6 to 11 p.m. at San Francisco's United Irish Cultural Center. While those who attended during the fifties are especially encouraged to attend, all alumni and friends of the University are welcome. The more the merrier, as the event is not just a reunion -- it's also a 50th birthday party for the campus.

In 1954 San Francisco State settled into its permanent home at 19th and Holloway avenues. Those who graduated that year will receive special recognition at the event.

"Although this event will specifically recognize the Class of 1954, all alumni are invited to join us in celebrating 50 years at the Lake Merced campus," says Nancy Gonzalez, director of alumni relations. "We hope to see many generations of SFSU graduates."

The evening begins with a cocktail hour, followed by dinner. For dessert, sponsor See's Candies will provide truffles at every table. Later, Gators can kick up their heels to the musical stylings of the Dick Vartanian Trio. Vartanian, a member of the Class of 1955, once directed the annual campus variety show. Radio personality Carter B. Smith of KABL (960AM), who graduated in 1959, will keep things hopping as emcee.

There's no dress code but alumni may feel free to arrive in their favorite fifties attire. With raffles and prizes, as well as a juke box filled with classic songs from the era, the evening is sure to be the most.

To reserve a space or request additional information, contact the Alumni Association at (415) 338-2217.
