Library Construction Updates

Library Building Project Resumes

SF State is pleased to announce that the expansion, seismic strengthening and renovation of the J. Paul Leonard Library building has resumed.  California’s fiscal crisis and budget impasse had caused a suspension of capital projects throughout California and the library project was among the halted projects.  With the passage of the State’s budget on February 20, the California State University Chancellor’s Office directed the campus to resume work on the Library Building Project.

Among the initial tasks that will be undertaken during project remobilization is the relocation of the Library’s collections within the building from the 4th, 5th and 6th floors to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. This will expedite work on the renovation of the existing building. As the collections are moved (Archives & Special Collections, de Bellis Collection circulating books, Government Publications, the Young People’s Collection, and call numbers A-C and T-Z), they may be temporarily unavailable.  Please check the Library’s web site for notices of collections temporarily in transit.

While this relocation had been scheduled to occur during the winter recess when demand for library resources is typically low, the two-month suspension delayed this part of the project until now.  Library faculty and staff  are working to ensure as little disruption to operations as possible. They are available to assist you in finding the resources you need. Nonetheless, over the course of the project, please be sure to plan ahead.  This is an extraordinary time and while the project may cause inconveniences, it will ultimately provide the campus community with a functional, accessible, seismically-strengthened, modern facility. In the interim, the University will make every effort to provide you with the services you need.
