2017 “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp for American High School Students

The Confucius Institutes at San Francisco State University (SF State), in cooperation with Beijing Normal University (BNU), will offer 2017 “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp for American High School Students, an annual Chinese language and culture experiencing program sponsored by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters.

The host of Summer Camp program in 2017 will provide American students with Chinese language, culture classes, and cultural experiencing activities.

1.Time and location:
July 8-21 (leaving SF on July 7 for 14-day program in China)

3.Application Requirements for Students
(1) American citizen with valid passport;
(2) Current high school student;
(3) Possesses a basic level of Chinese;
(4) Interested in learning Chinese language and culture;
(5) Healthy, able to travel internationally;
(6) No long-term stay in China (No more than 1 year);
(7) HSK/HSKK/YCT certificate. Those without certificates should register for the latest HSK online test before the deadline March 9 (testing on March 19, 2017 at SF State) and obtain the certificate later. About the test details, please visit

4.Application Requirements for Teachers/ Chaperons
(1) Respect and understand Chinese culture;
(2) Approachable and have a sense of responsibility, cooperative and assisting in the management of and communication with the campers;
(3) Rich experience in supervising students;
(4) In a healthy condition, able to travel internationally;
(5) Preferably under 50.

Responsibilities of the Teachers/ Chaperons:
(1) Host Student Orientation before the travel with Confucius Institute;
(2) Travel together with the team, participate in all the summer camp events and obey the rules;
(3) Responsible in supervising students and keep students safe;
(4) Help students adjust to the new environments and give instructions;
(5) Escort students in emergency and keep good contact; (6) Gather feedbacks within two weeks after the summer camp.

(1) Students and Teachers/Chaperons should pay for:
A. $200 application fee; (Check-only, payable to CI at SF State, non-refundable after the approval by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters);
B. International airfare; (paid to the travel agency);
C. $140 Visa application fee; (money order, cashier’s check, payable to “Consulate General of the P.R. China”, Master Card or Visa Card);
D. $60 International travel insurance. (Check-only, payable to CI at SF State, non-refundable).
(2) In-China costs:
Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters will cover the in-China costs of students and chaperones including food and lodging, transportation, and group activities while in China.

6.Application Deadline: May 5, 2017
Applicants should submit the Application Form with school or teacher recommendation letter to the Confucius Institute at SF State before the deadline on May 5, 2017. All qualified applications will be submitted to BNU and Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters for review and approval. The final name list will be confirmed by May 15, 2017. The invitation letters will be sent out by then.
