Media Advisory: Harry Belafonte to address participants in 1968 SF State student strike

 

WHAT:

Singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte will address alumni of the 1968 San Francisco State student-led strike at a special evening reception marking the 40th anniversary of the event.

Among the 100 strike alumni, activists and community members invited:

  • Actor and activist Danny Glover
  • Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums
  • Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown
  • Rev. Cecil Williams
  • Activist Janice Mirikitani
  • Superior Court Judge Ronald Quidachay
  • Tribal Chairperson of Indian Canyon Nation Anne Marie Sayers
  • Poet Sonia Sanchez
  • Poet Roberto Vargas

The reception is part of a four-day academic conference and commemoration of the strike's legacy. The 1968 student strike at SF State led to a national movement to diversify faculty and students on U.S. college campuses and the birth of SF State's College of Ethnic Studies.
