Media Advisory: Harry Belafonte to address participants in 1968 SF State student strike
WHAT:
Singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte will address alumni of the 1968 San Francisco State student-led strike at a special evening reception marking the 40th anniversary of the event.
Among the 100 strike alumni, activists and community members invited:
- Actor and activist Danny Glover
- Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums
- Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown
- Rev. Cecil Williams
- Activist Janice Mirikitani
- Superior Court Judge Ronald Quidachay
- Tribal Chairperson of Indian Canyon Nation Anne Marie Sayers
- Poet Sonia Sanchez
- Poet Roberto Vargas
The reception is part of a four-day academic conference and commemoration of the strike's legacy. The 1968 student strike at SF State led to a national movement to diversify faculty and students on U.S. college campuses and the birth of SF State's College of Ethnic Studies.
