MEDIA ADVISORY: Forum challenges the apparel industry to go green
Fashion retailers and sustainable fashion experts gather in San Francisco this Friday to discuss innovative sustainable practices for the local apparel industry
SAN FRANCISCO, October 25, 2007
WHAT
Faculty from San Francisco State University will share their sustainable textile industry expertise and discuss current and potentially sustainable business practices with professionals from the Bay Area fashion industry. Connie Ulasewicz and Gail Baugh, both faculty in SF State's degree program in apparel design and merchandising, will present six ways the fashion industry can be more sustainable: including the use of new digital fabric printing techniques and making yarn from recycled industrial waste.
WHERE
Room 554, 5th floor of the SF State Downtown Campus at 835 Market Street, San Francisco
WHEN
Friday, Oct. 26, 9 a.m. to noon
WHO
Fashion industry professionals scheduled to attend represent The Gap, Levi Strauss, Macy's West, Babbette, Dockers and G. Hensler. Connie Ulasewicz, formerly of Esprit, is an assistant professor of apparel design and merchandising at SF State and co-author of "Sustainable Fashion: Why Now?" [Fairchild Books, 2007]. Gail Baugh, formerly an independent sales agent for NI-Teijin Shoji (USA), Inc., is a textile specialist and lecturer on textiles at SF State.
WHY
"We read green is the new black, but the time is now to move beyond looking at sustainability as simply a fashion statement or marketing tool," said Ulasewicz. "Our methods of creating fiber, fabrics and therefore fashion, are changing."
"This will be the first forum to introduce innovative fiber and textile suppliers who can offer new sustainable choices," said Baugh. "The time is now to engage in the discussion of new ideas for our dynamic industry."
