F-1 Pre-Arrival and Post-Arrival Checklist

This checklist is meant to help F1 students prepare for their arrival in San Francisco and academic program at SF State.

 

Pre-Arrival

 

飩 Obtain access to My SF State Gateway and create an SF State e-mail account
飩 Carefully read the orientation information located at http://www.sfsu.edu/~oip/orient.htm
飩 Review your I-20 document when you receive it. Check that all the information is correct (spelling of your name, your birth date, program dates, etc.)
飩 Create a folder for all your important documents 鈥 make extra copies of all your immigration documents
飩 Pay SEVIS fee: http://www.fmjfee.com
飩 Locate your local U.S. consulate; schedule an appointment for a visa interview: http://www.usembassy.gov/
飩 Arrange travel to U.S. Plan to arrive at least one week before the first day of orientation. New Spring 2014 students should plan to arrive no later than January 16, 2014
飩 Plan your finances (check with your bank about travelers鈥 checks, money transfers, etc.)
飩 Research the San Francisco Bay Area and buy a San Francisco guidebook
飩 Make temporary housing arrangements for when you first arrive in San Francisco and research long term housing options: http://www.sfsu.edu/~housing/. If you want to live on campus apply for Housing at http://www.sfsu.edu/~housing/ as soon as possible. Please note that on-campus housing is limited and tends to fill up quickly.
飩 Arrange for travel from airport to your local US housing: http://www.flysfo.com/web/page/tofrom/transp-serv/
飩 Get a health check up 鈥 physical, dental, eye exam etc. Make sure you have any prescriptions written down and doctor鈥檚 instructions, if necessary.
飩 Review the 10 steps to enroll Spring 2014 - clear your registration holds and registere for placement tests

Post-arrival

 

飩 Locate permanent housing and update your local U.S. address at My SF State Gateway
飩 Explore mobile phone choices
飩 Research banking choices
飩 Research public transportation (know how to get to SF State) at http://www.511.org/
飩 Attend the Mandatory International Student Orientation (see http://www.sfsu.edu/~oip/orient.htm)
飩 Obtain SF State ID (After paying tuition and fees in full, bring your passport to One Stop at Student Services Building)
