Why Can鈥檛 I Have My Document Signed Today?
One question that international students often ask of the International Student Advisors is: "Why can't the advisors at OIP just sign my document when I walk into the office? Why do they need to hold it for 8 working days?"There are many aspects to maintaining "legal status" as a full-time international student which OIP must first verify before your document(s) can be processed and signed by one of the International Student Advisors. Your GPA, the number of units you have completed each semester, your student record in SEVIS, and your eligibility to return to SF State (for travel I-20 requests) as a legitimate student next semester, are among the many items that an advisor must first check before s/he can prepare and sign your document.
If you are requesting a travel signature on your I-20, we may also need to prepare a new I-20 for you in cases when you have changed your major field of study, or source of financial support, or when other information on your I-20 has changed. We are also a very busy office as we try our best to provide services to the more than 2,000 international students enrolled here at SF State.
When you just walk in and ask for your document to be signed, there isn't sufficient time for us to check these important aspects of your student status. That is why we cannot prepare and sign your document(s) while you wait (unless you have a true emergency requiring immediate attention). Please plan ahead to that we can have enough time to prepare your documents in a timely and efficient manner. This is the best way that you can "help us to help you better," so that we can process your request in a timely and efficient manner.
We appreciate your continued cooperation and understanding.
