September 2005 STAR of the Month

Sherriann Ng, manager of human resources for the College of Science and Engineering, is a campus mainstay. She arrived on campus "a day after the cops and horses left in 1969" and, except for a few years off when her son was born, she has worked on campus ever since.

Ng oversees the implementation of all faculty and staff hiring and retention in the College. She also monitors personnel activity to make sure that the College is in compliance with SFSU policies and state and federal laws, and she does long- and short-term budget planning.

"Sherri's knowledge and accuracy on policy issues and procedures is greatly appreciated by the many people who come to her every day for information," Dean Sheldon Axler said. "[She] is a trusted advisor to me on many issues; I truly value her wisdom and outstanding judgment."

Axler also noted that her planning helped the College ride out the recent budget problems "with less pain than we had expected."

Ng began her SFSU career as a secretary in the Chemistry Department. She then moved over to the Office of School Relations. After her son Kelly was born she took some time off and wasn't planning to return until former Science Dean Jim Kelly called and offered her a job as his assistant. She decided to come back to campus.

It's a decision she doesn't regret.

"I enjoy the people I work with," she said. "I enjoy the complexity of the responsibilities I have."

Ng lives in San Mateo with her husband Frank and son Kelly. She claims golf as a passion -- one shared by the rest of her family. They often plan family vacations around golfing including trips to South Carolina, Oregon and Hawaii.

Please join us in congratulating Sherriann and thank him for making such a difference.

As the STAR of the Month, Ng will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more.
