January 2005 STAR of the Month

Kathy Dalheim's official title is assistant to the dean of the College of Humanities. What she really does is make sure that the college's general services office, located in room 125 of the Humanities building (aka HUM 125), runs smoothly.

Which is no small task. HUM 125 is a combination mail, copy and supplies room and information center. Dalheim makes sure that mail and packages are received and distributed, that the copy machines are functioning (and that faculty know how to use them), and that office supplies are disbursed.

She also is on the front line with such problems with the building as opening up locked classrooms for faculty, and forwarding requests to replace broken desks and burned out lights.

"The variety of it is what I enjoy," Dalheim said. "Every day is different. I never know for sure what is going to happen. I never know who is going to show up."

Indeed, because of its open doors, long hours and location on the ground floor of the building, HUM 125 tends to act as a magnet for lost souls. Not that Dalheim minds if some timid student or hurried delivery person steps through the doorway with a needy look on his or her face. She usually knows how to point them in the right direction.

"We appreciate Kathy Dalheim's many years of dedicated service to the college," Dean Paul Sherwin said. He also said that many faculty appreciated Dalheim's willingness to respond to Sherwin's suggestion to open HUM 125 earlier in the day -- 7:30 a.m. -- so that those with 8 a.m. classes have time to prepare course materials.

Dalheim has worked for the college for 24 years, beginning with a part-time job in the dean's office when she was a grad student in broadcast and electronic communication arts. She finished her master of arts degree in 1988. She also earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications from University of Illinois, Carbondale.

A resident of San Francisco's Castro district, Dalheim enjoys motorcycles and cooking. She commutes to work on her 2001 Honda Rebel which you will see parked on Font -- right next to the Humanities building, of course.

Please join us in congratulating Kathy and thank her for making such a difference.

As the STAR of the Month, Dalheim will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more.
