Jemi Lie, the December STAR of the Month, works in the College of Extended Learning as a registration special assistant. His main duty is to provide information to students interested in CEL and Open University courses. He also answers phone queries and guides students through the registration process at the One-Stop Student Center.

His job requires people skills, patience and experience in dealing with students -- and Lie fits the role perfectly.

"His customer service skills are top notch. I have yet to hear him complain of his workload or to say he does not have time to help someone," said Jackie Gray, a colleague.

Prior to taking on his current job, Lie worked as a student assistant for two years in the same department. Impressed with Lie's work, Julie Faquilar, who then supervised CEL's Registration Department, offered him a full-time job after he graduated from SFSU in 2002 with bachelor’s degrees in marketing and information systems.

Born in Indonesia, Lie arrived in the United States in 1992. During his free time, he enjoys movies and listens to all types of music, from pop tunes by Britney Spears to rap by Tupac Shakur. Lie says he’s a "big kid" because he loves video games and collects comic books and action figures.

Lie, 29, says the best part of his job is the interaction with students and co-workers.

"People here are really friendly," said Lie, who enjoys the feeling of accomplishing a task. "I’ve had the best experience working here."

Lie also takes pleasure in helping students because he understands what a challenge it is to be a student – working and taking classes. "I've been a student all my life," said Lie. "It's neat to be able to help students and it's a way of giving back to the University."

During the holiday break, Lie will return to Indonesia for the first time since 1994 and visit with family members. He hopes to put his marketing degree to good use, helping his family expand a jewelry business in Indonesia.

As the STAR of the Month, Lie will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more. He will also be eligible for the STAR of the Year award.
