WHAT:

San Francisco State’s 102nd Commencement exercises, where more than 4,000 students of the 7,400 member class of ’03 will graduate before a crowd of 22,000 from 115 countries.

WHO:

  • With guitar in hand and wearing a cap and gown, 64-year-old Peter Yarrow of the famed folk music trio Peter, Paul & Mary will deliver the keynote address. (Speaks at 2 p.m.)
  • Writer and rock journalist Ben Fong-Torres, who earned a bachelor's of arts degree in radio-television-film from SFSU in 1966, will receive the SFSU Alumni Association's 2003 Alumnus of the Year Award. (Speaks at 1:40 p.m.)
  • Nelly Lau, a first-generation Chinese American with top honors in electrical engineering, will be the student speaker representing SFSU's Class of 2003. (Speaks at 1:20 p.m.)
  • Stand-out students include: the oldest grad -- a 77-year-old military veteran from Stockton who will earn his fourth college degree.

WHEN AND WHERE:

Saturday, May 24. Procession begins at 12:15 p.m. in Cox Stadium on the campus. (See map) Commencement speeches begin at 1 p.m., and graduates throw up their mortarboards in celebration at 2:45 p.m.

PARKING & MEDIA AREA:

Reserved parking for credentialed media located in front of the entrance to the parking structure, off South State Drive (off Lake Merced Boulevard). Use parking structure elevator to get to the top floor, walk to Cox Stadium. Media are required to check in with the Public Affairs staff for assistance onto the field. Mult-box available.
