New Web template available online

SF State's new Web design template offers a visually appealing and unifying design for the University's colleges and departments. The template provides unified elements to identify official University Web pages, with options that allow college and departmental sites to have a unique look and feel. The template is compliant with SF State Web accessibility guidelines and will help speed and enhance compliance with California State University requirements. Faculty associate openings

Tenured faculty may apply for one of two faculty associate positions for fall 2008 in the Center for Teaching and Faculty Development. Each position brings .20 assigned time to work on one of several possible projects related to teaching and scholarship, including universal design for learning, the scholarship of teaching and learning, modeling and teaching equity and social justice, and other pertinent areas of interest. Totem reception

A reception to mark the installation of the totems on the North Plaza of the Cesar Chavez Student Center will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. on the North Plaza lawn outside the Student Center. The totems were created by sculpture instructor Terry Marashlian.

Applications available for California Pre-Doctoral Program

Faculty are encouraged to invite students to apply for the California Pre-Doctoral Program. The deadline for filing completed applications is 4 p.m. Friday, March 21, in the English Department Office, HUM 289. News from the Academic Senate

The Academic Senate will meet Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Nob Hill Room of the Seven Hills Conference Center. The agenda will include:

  • Open-floor period from 2 to 2:10 p.m. Approval of the agenda for Feb. 26, 2008 Approval of the minutes for the Feb. 12, 2008 meeting
  • A report from Linda Buckley, associate vice president of academic planning and educational effectiveness, on CUSP Committee Reports Graduate Programs
  • A recommendation from the Executive Committee about proposed revisions to Academic Senate bylaws Recommendations from the Faculty Affairs Committee about proposed revisions to the syllabus policy 
  • A recommendation from the Executive Committee regarding the proposed 2008-09 Academic Senate meeting schedule
  • A recommendation from the Curriculum Review and Approval committee regarding proposed revisions to the MFA degree requirements for creative writing. 
  • Recommendation from the Curriculum Review and Approval Committee regarding the proposed name change of the Master of Science degree in applied geosciences

Professor of Communication Studies Joseph Tuman commented on some perils of speechwriting; Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy Debra Fischer described the complexity of planet-hunting; Diplomat-in-Residence David Fischer suggested reasons behind Kosovo’s recent acknowledged independence; Professor of Political Science Robert Smith offered insights on the departure of members of the Republican party from Congress; and Associate Professor of Design and Industry Martin Linder discussed a project he started in a San Francisco high school.

Scholarship Concert Series

Professor of Classical Piano William Corbett-Jones will launch a scholarship fund in his name with the William Corbett-Jones Scholarship Concert Series at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 and Sunday, April 6 in Knuth Hall, Creative Arts building. Prize-winning poet to give public reading

Translator and poet Clayton Eshleman will read and discuss his work from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m Wednesday, Feb. 27 in the Poetry Center, HUM 512. The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Wordsmith Guild, Creative Writing Department and College of Humanities.

Professor to give speech on Filipino migratory labor

Dawn Mabalon, assistant professor of history, will be the featured speaker at the Labor Archives and Research Center's 22nd anniversary evening program at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29.  The event, free and open to the public, takes place at ILWU, Local 34, 4 Berry St. Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m.

Talking torture

The Philosophy Department is sponsoring a talk by Philosophy Lecturer Kirk Nutting titled, "Torture as Mental Pain: The Torture Convention, the U.S. Reservations, and the Problem of Other Minds," at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29 in HUM 587.

Erasing stereotypes

The departments of Africana Studies and Women Studies present, "The Mammy Project," a one-woman performance by Michelle Nicole Matlock, from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29 in HUM 133. The performance will use original music, storytelling and historical speeches to transform the "mammy stereotype." A discussion and reception will follow. 'Prison Culture: Art, Ideas and Dialogue'

In conjunction with the "Criminal: Art and Criminal Justice in America" exhibit, a March 1 symposium, "Prison/Culture: Art, Ideas and Dialogue," will feature panel discussions and workshops with artists, scholars and activists in criminal justice. The symposium will take place from noon to 6 p.m. in Jack Adams Hall of the Cesar Chavez Student Center. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required. Journalism banquet

The Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism will present this year's Founder's Award to Walt Swanston, director of diversity management at National Public Radio, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 4 in the Seven Hills Conference Center. 'Don Juan'

Noted Bay Area theatre director and SF State alumnus Mark Jackson brings "Don Juan" to campus March 6 – 16 in an adaptation he describes as "a psychopathic, cruel, yet very funny production." Performances will take place in the Little Theatre, Creative Arts building, Thursday through Sunday both weeks. Tickets range from $12 to $20.
