Karen Clopton, chief of operations for the Port of San Francisco, will join the San Francisco State University Foundation Inc. on April 1 as its new chief of operations. She will also handle the Foundation's in-house legal needs.

While not legally part of SFSU, the Foundation exists to promote and assist the University's educational mission. Founded in 1946, it is involved in a variety of projects, including the building and management of the student apartment complex, the Village at Centennial Square, and the operation of several outdoor cafes and kiosks across campus.

At the Port of San Francisco, Clopton supervised the Port's business operations and operation divisions, including accounting, human resources and finance. She graduated cum laude from Vassar College with a bachelor's degree in political science and Hispanic studies. She holds a law degree from Antioch University and has more than 18 years experience in employment law and labor relations.

Clopton is also engaged in civic activities. She served four terms as president of the San Francisco Civil Service Commission.
