Program Purpose
The Summer Humanities Institute is sponsored by the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA. It is designed to enhance the competencies of students who plan to pursue an MA or Ph.D. in the humanities or humanistic social sciences (anthropology, art history, cultural/critical studies, ethnomusicology, history, literature, political science, sociology).
Program Description
This 8-week preparatory program provides participating students with access to preeminent faculty affiliated with the Bunche Center. Participants are paired with a mentor who provides guidance and direction on a student-selected research project. The program is designed around five core activities: seminars on new humanistic scholarship, writing and presenting an in-depth research paper, skills-building workshops to enhance preparatory competencies, faculty mentoring and guidance for student-conducted research, and cultural enrichment activities.
Benefits
The program provides a stipend, up to $450 for transportation, on-campus housing, and meals.
Applicant Profile
Applicant should have a clear research focus on an aspect of the African American experience. Students should plan to pursue a graduate degree in the humanities or humanistic social sciences. Areas NOT eligible are: law, psychology, science, math, economics. Historically underrepresented students are strongly encouraged to apply.
Application Process
A research proposal and writing sample are required for this program.
Eligibility
Juniors, seniors, and students with a bachelor's degree who have not yet begun a graduate program are eligible to apply.
Citizenship
U.S. cizens or permanent residents.
Deadline
