Program Purpose
The UCSD Amgen Scholars Program aims to provide students with the skills to become research scholars, to stimulate serious consideration of graduate study, and to increase learning and networking opportunities for students committed to a professional or academic research career in biological sciences or bioengineering.
Program Description
This 10-week, full-time research experience for undergraduates pairs students in two-member research teams to encourage learning the fundamentals of academic collaboration. Research projects are designed and supervised by faculty mentors in conjunction with students' research interests. Each student is trained to write a research proposal and paper, and present his or her paper at the UCSD Summer Research Conference.
Benefits
Participants are awarded a $3,600 stipend, on-campus room and board, and a $500 travel allowance.
Applicant Profile
The ideal candidate has a serious interest in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D., but not an M.D. alone. Preferred majors are in Biology, Molecular Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Chemistry, Bioengineering, and Neurosciences.
Application Process
If the applicant's school is on a semester or quarter system with a Fall Semester start date earlier than the UC Amgen Program ends, he or she will need to obtain a letter, and send as part of the application process, indicating permission for beginning your fall semester late, should the applicant be selected as a finalist. The ten-week period of the program is mandatory, and there are no exceptions. The letter would be from the dean of the applicant's college or university, or the applicant's academic advisor.
Eligibility
Sophomores, juniors and non-graduating seniors with a GPA of 3.2 or above who are returning in the fall to continue their undergraduate studies.
Citizenship
U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Deadline
Usually the beginning of February.
