Major housing problems confronting American society. Related social, cultural, economic, political, and technological factors. Proposed solutions.

542 Human Dimensions in Housing and Interiors (3) [GE]

Study of relationships between people and various characteristics of their habitats. Human response to environmental features. Social, cultural, psychological, and ecological factors which determine how individuals behave in different housing environments. Implications for design solutions to meet human needs.

557 Restaurant Management (3)

Prerequisites: CFS 150, 353, DIET 458, and CFS 285 or DIET 152. Application of standards and theories dealing with restaurant operation, including marketing strategies, purchasing, production, and services of different types of restaurants; e.g., privately owned vs. chain operations vs. management companies. Classwork, two units; laboratory, one unit.

Prerequisite: CFS 364, 460, and MATH or BA 110. Consumer influences: fashion, mass media, ready-to-wear market, demographics, societal trends, and current developments and research in clothing and textiles; their relation to consumer behavior and satisfying clothing needs.

568 Culture and Historical Costume (3)

Prerequisite: CFS 364 or equivalent. Analysis of variations in dress patterns developed from the study of historical and cultural influences on western and non-western clothing and textiles. May be repeated once for credit.

580 Individualized Instruction (1-4)

Prerequisite: consent of instructor. Individualized instruction related to a specific area of study in consumer and family studies or dietetics. May be repeated for a total of four units.

631 Financial Issues and Planning for Older Adults (1)

Prerequisite: CFS 439 or consent of instructor. Assessing the totality of resources available to older adults and analyzing their financial issues. Anticipating changes required in living styles during advanced years and preparing them to meet their living styles through financial planning.

632 Counseling Families in Financial Crisis (1)

Prerequisite: CFS 431 or consent of instructor. Counseling strategies for assisting families in controlling their expenditures according to family values and goals, and in budgeting for fixed and flexible expenses including credit purchases and health, automobile and property insurance.

653 Nutrition Education Experiences for Young Children (1)

Nutrition education for young children. Influences affecting development of children's positive food habits. Learning activities for integration of food related concepts with regular classroom activities. Preschool to age 12.

655 Principles and Methods of Non-Classroom Communication (3)

Prerequisite: minimum of fifteen semester units of CFS/D course work. Objectives, methods, resources, and evaluation techniques for educational programs for commercial/community settings. Experience with media and applications to CFS/D subject matter. Developing skills as a communicator. Classwork, two units; laboratory, one unit.

Prerequisites: upper division standing and consent of instructor. Topic to be specified in Class Schedule. Discussions of current topics focused on a field in consumer and family studies or dietetics. New concepts in home economics including review of research and application of findings. May be repeated when topics vary.

Prerequisite: CFS 320 or 325, or equivalent. Recent research and theories in child development and family relations; current trends and issues: social, cultural, and intra-familial forces which influence family function; evaluation of resources in the field. Opportunity for individual study in areas of special interest.

730 Seminar in Family Economics and Home Management (3)

Prerequisite: six units related upper division courses. Review, appraisal, and potential applications of selected research. Examination of selected trends, issues, and current theories relative to consumer and family resource management. Implications for specialists in professional roles.

830 Seminar: Policies/Strategies for Consumer Budget and Debt Counseling (3)

Prerequisites: FIN 250 or 350, CFS 430, 431. Consumer/family behaviors antecedent to serious debt; modifying money habits; policies, procedures, responsibilities of budget and family credit counselors and organizations; client/counselor/creditor transactions; counseling strategies; ethical practices. Fifteen hours interview/observation.

881 Internship (3-7)

Field experience offered by the Consumer and Family Studies/Dietetics Department in cooperation with a private/public profit or non-profit organization which enables students to acquire competencies and experience required for fulfilling professional responsibilities. Written critique of experience required.

Prerequisite: departmental approval. In-depth study, discussion, and evaluation of research of topics germane to consumer and family studies and/or dietetics. May not be used to satisfy the 30-unit minimum for GAP. May be repeated with departmental approval.

898 Master's Thesis (3)

Prerequisites: advancement to candidacy for the Master of Arts and approval of the graduate major adviser. Investigation and written presentation of a problem in an area of concern related to the candidate's professional role. Graduate Approved Program and Proposal for Culminating Experience Requirement forms must be approved by the Graduate Division before registration.

An intensive study of a particular problem in home economics under the direction of a member of the department. Enrollment gained only by formal petition requiring signed approval of instructor, adviser, and department chair. Available only to students who have done previous work in the department. Must be scheduled with instructor one semester in advance.
