Prerequisite: Art History Concentration; senior or entering graduate standing; 3.4 GPA in art history courses; and review of two research papers. Seminar in art history research methods. Historiography and models used in the evaluation of works of art. Paired with ART 702. ART 602 and 702 may both be taken for a combined total of six units.

Prerequisites: ART 560, portfolio review, and area consent. A seminar integrating the history of photography with contemporary discourse on photographic representation within the continuum of the individual student's creative development.

699 Special Study (1-3)

Prerequisites: upper division standing, permission of the instructor, and approval of the student's adviser and dean of the college. Independent study, under supervision of a staff member selected by the student, of some aspect of the field not covered by regular courses. May be repeated for credit with consent of instructor, the adviser, and the department chair, but no more than three units can be taken during any one semester.

700 Seminar in Art Theory and Criticism (3)

Prerequisites: classified graduate standing in art. Seminar focusing on art theory, aesthetics, and issues of art criticism as they apply to the creative artist. Should be completed in the first semester of enrollment of classified graduate studies.

701 Art History: Images and Meaning (3)

Prerequisites: ART 602, 700, classified graduate standing and/or consent of instructor. Advanced research seminar in art history. Emphasizes historical area studies, iconography, and textual analyses. May be repeated once for a total of six units of credit with permission of the instructor.

702 Advanced Methods in Art History (3)

Prerequisite: classified graduate status; ART 602 or equivalent. To be taken the semester before ART 898. Advanced seminar in art history research methods. Paired with ART 602. ART 602 and 702 may both be taken for a combined total of six units.

704 Seminar in Art (3)

Prerequisites: classified standing in art, consent of instructor and graduate major adviser. Intensive critical investigation of selected aspects of the visual arts. May be repeated for a total of eighteen units.

780 Graduate Two-Dimensional Studio (3)

Prerequisite: classified graduate status. Integration of two-dimensional media of painting, photography, and printmaking. Discussion of issues and aesthetics of two-dimensional art. Background in one of the following: painting, printmaking, photography. May be repeated for a total of six units.

785 Graduate Three-Dimensional Studio (3)

Prerequisite: classified graduate status. Workshop with emphasis creating multi-media through investigation and integration of technical and conceptual concerns from the areas of ceramics, conceptual design, glass, sculpture, textiles, and metal arts. May be repeated for a total of six units.

800 level courses: Terminal experiences comprising the main body of work for the Master of Arts.

850 Directed Experience in Public Roles for Artists (3)

Prerequisites: classified graduate status in art; successful completion of first year review; consent of supervising instructor and graduate major adviser. Supervised directed experiences and seminar in the teaching of art and/or internship in other public roles that artists occupy: arts project management, museum and gallery curating or preparation, etc. May be repeated for a total of six units.

852 Directed Experience in Art Education (3)

Prerequisites: classified graduate status; consent of the supervising instructor and the graduate major adviser. Experiences in the teaching of art under the supervision of an instructor.

853 Directed Experience in Museum Education (3)

Prerequisites: ART 700, 705, or 602 and consent of the graduate major adviser. Intern experience in museums, community centers, and art programs under the supervision of an Art Department instructor. May be repeated for a total of six units.

880 Special Tutorial (0)

Prerequisites: classified graduate standing in Art and consent of major adviser. Supervised direction of independent studio activities. Intended to provide continuity of advising under special circumstances. CR/NC grading only.

882 Tutorial in Studio (3 or 6)

Prerequisites: classified graduate status in Art and consent of instructor and graduate major adviser. Critical direction by an instructor on a one-to-one basis. Intended to develop a student's individual vision and capabilities as a professional artist. May be repeated for a total of six units.

890 Creative Work Research (3)

Prerequisites: ART 700, 704, 705, and consent of major adviser. Development of creative research in the art area with direct application to the creative work project. Must be taken in the semester before acceptance in ART 894.

894 Creative Work Project (3)

Prerequisites: ART 890 and advancement to candidacy for the Master of Fine Arts. Selected projects for students with prerequisite proficiencies in one or more areas. Graduate Approved Program and Proposal for Culminating Experience Requirement forms must be approved by the Graduate Division before enrollment. May be repeated with permission of the department chair if taken previously for an M.A. at SFSU.

897 Research Projects in Art (3)

Prerequisites: ART 700, 704, 705, and consent of graduate major adviser. Development of a problem of major interest to a student with direct application of methods of research, research findings and production to creative activity in the art area.

898 Master's Thesis (3)

Prerequisites: ART 700, 701, 702, and advancement to candidacy for the Master of Arts. Adviser approved one-semester paper (c. 50 pp.) demonstrating art historical theory, methods, research. Graduate Approved Program and Proposal for Culminating Experience Requirement forms must be approved by the Graduate Division before registration.

899 Special Study (1–3)

Prerequisites: classified graduate standing and consent of instructor. Independent study, under supervision, of some aspect of the field related to the student's final thesis or project. May be repeated for a total of six units with consent of instructor. CR/NC grading only.
