Holiday weekend detail to be conducted by San Francisco State University police
WHEN: 10:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 23, through 3:00 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005 WHERE: Southbound 19th Avenue between Buckingham Way and Holloway Ave. WHO: Staffed by SFSU police officers trained in the detection of drivers who are impaired by drugs or alcohol. They will be equipped with state-of-the-art hand-held breath testing devices that provide accurate measurement of blood-alcohol concentrations. SFSU police’s checkpoints in July and October sent drunk drivers to jail. WHY: In October 2004, the SFSU police department received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety allowing the Department to purchase new traffic enforcement equipment. In exchange, the Department has agreed to conduct 12 DUI sobriety checkpoints. Kim Wible, SFSU campus police chief, said the objective is to "send a clear message to those considering mixing alcohol and/or drugs with driving -- don't do it." -###-
