GREAT VISUALS: Festival welcomes community, celebrates preparation of preschoolers for school WHAT: San Francisco State University will host the sixth annual Jumpstart For a Day festival in an effort to focus public attention on the importance of early literacy and give families of young children ideas for fun, home-based literacy activities. Jumpstart For a Day is a one-of-a-kind festival that features hands-on, fun learning experiences to give families ideas for literacy activities that they can re-create at home. The event will feature 20 learning stations for children, including a science exploration station complete with snails and worms and an All About Me station where children can explore their bodies and feelings. Jumpstart For a Day will also include such educational entertainment as SF Zookeepers and their animals, the San Francisco Fire Department and storybook readers. A unique family resource center will be set up to connect community members to Bay Area organizations that provide health and educational services to San Francisco families. The festival is part of Jumpstart Literacy Week, a national campaign that focuses public attention on the importance of early literacy, which runs through April 9. It is the city's largest event celebrating the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Week of the Young Child, held April 3-9. Jumpstart is a national early education organization that works toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Through extraordinary attention in yearlong one-to-one relationships, Jumpstart inspires children to learn, adults to teach, families to get involved, and communities to progress together. Headquartered in Boston, Jumpstart engages 2,100 college students as mentors to nearly 8,000 children in 57 communities, serving 200 preschools nationwide. WHO:
