SAN FRANCISCO, October 30, 2002 - San Francisco State University will join college campuses around the world Nov. 18-23 in celebrating the third annual International Education Week with several events focusing on Middle East issues and culture.

Some events at SFSU are also being organized in conjunction with the University's Year of Civil Discourse, a yearlong program of events designed to promote constructive civil discourse among all members of the campus community.

With this year's theme "Securing the Future Through Study and Exchange, " the goal of International Education Week is to help raise the profile and importance of international education and exchange, build greater international understanding, encourage programs that prepare Americans for a global environment, and attract future leaders from abroad to study in the United States.

Highlights from the week's events include:

• "Iraq and the United Nations." Lecture by Amer Araim, former Iraqi diplomat and U.N. Secretariat official. 9:10-10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18. HSS building, room 362. Free.
• "Inside the Mosque." Slide presentation on mosque architecture and its development as a sacred place. Demonstration and explanation of Muslim ritual prayer led by Carel Bertram, SFSU assistant professor of humanities. Noon-1:10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18. • "The Islamic Civilization's Contributions to the World." Screening of documentary, "Islam: Religion and Empire," followed by discussion with Maziar Behrooz, SFSU assistant professor of history and noted Islamic scholar. 1:10-3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18.
