Manny
Mashouf, the founder and chairman of bebe stores inc., has been named
2005 Alumnus of the Year.
Mashouf will be honored at a private campus reception Friday, May 27. He will receive the award officially at the University's 104th annual Commencement exercises at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, May 28, in Cox Stadium. "Manny Mashouf’s great talents, good judgment, hard work and high standards have enabled him to rise to the top of his profession," President Robert A. Corrigan said. "Along with his great success he has remained a strong friend of the University, and for that we are grateful." Mashouf earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1966 and founded bebe 10 years later. What began as a small boutique on Polk Street in San Francisco has grown into a successful chain of stores featuring its own brand of women’s clothing and accessories. Mashouf and his wife Neda are actively involved in SFSU alumni activities and continue to support the University's strategic planning goals. To date they have donated more than $200,000 -- primarily to the College of Business to help recruit and hire faculty. Manny Mashouf, inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2003, is a member of the College of Business Advisory Board. The Alumnus of the Year award goes to former students who have gained recognition for significant contributions to their field of work. Previous winners include 2004 honoree and E-LOAN co-founder/CEO Chris Larsen, journalist and 2005 Commencement speaker Ben Fong-Torres , "Frasier" co-creator and executive producer Peter Casey, jazz and cabaret singer Wesla Whitfield, actress Annette Bening, conductor Kent Nagano, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown and physician and NASA astronaut Yvonne Cagle. -- Matt Itelson
