Mission Statement

The Vista Room and its supporting facilities are teaching/learning laboratories providing learning experiences for students enrolled in foodservice management courses for Hospitality Management, Dietetics, and Family & Consumer Sciences.

Objectives

Program Activities

The Vista Room functions as a restaurant for fine dining, acclaimed for its exquisite cuisine and service. The facility is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:45 am to 1:30 pm. Seating is from 11:45 - 12:30 only.  As laboratory components in several courses (Foods, Production and Service; Management of Quantity Food Production; and Restaurant Management) students prepare the luncheon menu items under the supervision of the chef and faculty.  Vegetarian meals may be prepared upon request at the time of your reservation and again at meal service.

Reservations (Call 415-405-3530 or 415-338-6807)

The Vista Room requires pre-paid reservations and has a cancellation notice of 24 hours. Rescheduling of paid and block ticket reservations will be honored prior to this 24 hour period at no cost to the guest.  Guests forfeit the cost of lunches (individual or reserved blocks) if not rescheduled.  If you are using block tickets, reservations must still be made prior to 10am of the day of service.

Large Luncheon Groups (n=15)

For large groups, payment in full has to be made two weeks in advance of the event.  The Vista Room may be able to accommodate large group events later than 1:30 pm for an additional charge. Typically, requests for one hour of extra service will be an additional $2.00 per person. Prior arrangements are required for the following: special table and seating arrangement, pre-selection of menu items, use of microphone, podium, folding screen, and any special requests. Menu selection one week prior to the luncheon is preferred to expedite service. Please call the Dining Room Manager in the Vista Room at 338-3411 one week before your luncheon.

In order to keep a safe workflow for students, the Vista Room cannot accommodate any change of table rearrangement after your luncheon begins.

The Vista Room cannot accommodate additional guests after the luncheon starts, as student managers are not permitted to handle cash.  To add extra guests, please call 405-3529 prior to 10 am of the day of service.

Block tickets cannot be used for a one-time event which uses the whole room. To schedule the whole room for a luncheon event, the cost is $910.00. Other guests will not be scheduled if you reserve the whole room.  Please call at 405-3529 one week in advance to make special arrangements.  Menu selection and final number in your party is due one week prior to event.

Cancellation of a large group reservation must be made two weeks before the event for a full refund.

Catering/Reception and Special Group Events - The Vista Room handles a minimal number of special receptions and events as part of the students' laboratory experience consistent with the course content as planned by the faculty. The cost of a three-hour reception depends on the menu and required staff to be arranged between the laboratory coordinator and the event representative.

Students who are currently enrolled in specific courses may conduct special projects as part of course requirements or application of knowledge to further enhance education acquired in the program. The use of the facilities to prepare and serve food may be possible only under the supervision of the SFSU staff/faculty at the Vista Room and upon the approval of faculty and chairs of the departments of Hospitality Management and Consumer and Family Studies/Dietetics.

Staffing

The Vista Room is staffed by students enrolled in Foods, Production and Service; Restaurant Management; and Management of Quantity Food Purchasing and Production.  SFSU supervising staff/faculty must be present at the Vista Room and/or the Quantity Food Production Laboratory if both or either of these facilities is used at special events.

Management

The Vista Room is managed by the faculty in the above courses, the Chair of the Department of Hospitality Management and Chair of the Department Consumer & Family Studies/Dietetics.

The Vista Room and the Quantity Food Production Laboratory are currently not available for rent or contract by groups outside the HM and CFS/D departments.
