ELM/EPT General Information
The California State University (CSU) English Placement Test (EPT) and Entry-Level Mathematics Test (ELM) are not admission tests. They are placement tests that enable CSU campuses to find out whether you need remedial courses in reading, writing , and mathematics before undetaking college level work requiring these fundamental skills. If you need help, the CSU wants to be sure you get it right away so that you will succeed at college. This is why you must take the EPT and ELMno later than the deadline set by San Francisco State in your admissions mailing. In other words, if you are required to take the EPT and the ELM but fail to do so, you will not be allowed to attend SFSU. If you earn certain scores, then you must start math or English Early Start courses during the summer before your first semester.. For more information, go to the ETS website or call call 925-808-2142.
For information regarding possible exemptions from taking ELM or EPT, please see "Who Takes the Test? Who Doesn't" at the ETS website.
The ELM consists of 50 multiple choice questions. There is a 90 minute testing time. No aids are allowed.
