Burk Hall

Named for SFSU's first president, Burk Hall has undergone a recent renovation and expansion, with the addition of a 5 story wing. The classrooms and offices for the College of Education occupy this building. The College of Education offers a variety of educational credentials and Masters degree programs, such as the Elementary, Secondary and Special Education programs. In order to teach elementary school, you need a Multiple Subjects Credential, and the best major to prepare for that is the Liberal Studies major.

Teaching

SFSU was originally founded as a teacher's college and continues to offer excellent teacher training programs. Did you know? The California State University system trains 1 out of every 6 teachers in the US. SFSU is the third highest in graduating teacher's of color in the United States! It is estimated that in the next few years, the state of California will need an additional 100,000 new teachers. Are you interested?

Majors

Burk Hall is also home to the Consumer and Family Studies/Dietetics departments for students interested in Home Economics, Interior Design, Clothing and Textiles and Dietetics. Burk Hall houses our Nursing Department as well. SFSU, like all of the California State Universites has an impacted nursing program. So if you are interested in becoming a nurse, be aware of the competitiveness of this major.

Vista Room

On the forth floor of Burk Hall is the Vista Room, which offers 3-course gourmet lunches during the semester. It is entirely run by the Hospitality Management and Dietetics majors, who serve as well as cook the meals. The ambiance is great, and the price too. Advanced tickets are on sale for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunches from 12-1:30 with one seating only between 12-12:30 pm. It's a great place to take visiting parents and relatives.

Brandy says:

In the basement of Burk Hall is the wrestling room which doubles as a yoga studio. The yoga instructor keeps the lights low and plays relaxing music as students come and go between classes. It's a great place to stretch out and relax, even if you are not taking yoga.

Victoria says:

The Vista room is a sit-down restaurant run by the students of the hospitality and dietetics programs. It is a great place to take visitors and is a a change from the campus fast food. There is real silverware at this restaurant, as well as napkins. So long plastic forks and paper napkins!
Also a great place on a sunny day is the fifth floor atrium. Good for studying or a picnic!
