SFSU Public Affairs Press ReleasePublished by the Public Affairs Office at San Francisco State University, Diag Center. |
WHAT: San Francisco State University will host a community meeting to discuss the demolition of Verducci Hall that is taking place on Sunday, March 28 at 4 p.m.
WHEN: Wednesday, March 24, 1999, 6:30 p.m.
WHO: Representatives from the following organizations will present information and answer questions: San Francisco State University, San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic, Granite Excavation & Demolition, Inc., the general contractor; Controlled Demolition Incorporated, the implosion subcontractor.
WHERE: On the San Francisco State campus, in the Humanities Building, Room 133.
WHY: Over the past several months, SFSU has worked closely with the San Francisco Police Department to inform area neighbors. Tonight’s community meeting will take place on the University’s campus in Humanities Building, Room 133 at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 1999.
While no construction activity can be done without some inconvenience to the surrounding neighborhood, the implosion will be an extremely localized event with little or no impact beyond a two block radius, outside of which one may hear a noise similar to a 15-second fireworks display.
In addition, Verducci has been and remains a structurally unsound building that poses a risk to the campus and external community. Alternate methods of demolition were considered, but due to the building’s structural instability, they were rejected because they might cause a limited structural collapse.
