2010 Sea Lion Bowl tests local budding scientists
WHAT: Teams from 16 Northern California and Nevada high
schools will gather for quiz show style competitions to test their knowledge
of science and math. Called the "Sea Lion Bowl," this regional
day-long academic competition is hosted by SF State's Romberg Tiburon Center
for Environmental Studies. The Sea Lion Bowl is one of 25 regional competitions
across the United States. The winning team from each region will advance
to the National Ocean Science Bowl.
Originating in 1998, the Year of the Ocean, the
Bowl competitions provide a national venue for students who excel in math
and science to test their knowledge of the ocean environment in the fields
of physics, chemistry, geology, biology and atmospheric science.
WHERE: Thornton Hall, San Francisco State University, 19th and Holloway Avenues
WHEN: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010
(Preliminary competition 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., semi-finals 3:45 p.m., final round
5 p.m.)
WHO: One hundred entrants from the following high schools: Academy of Arts and Sciences (San Francisco), Albany High School, Andrew P. Hill High School (San Jose), Aptos High School, Douglas High School (Minden, Nev.), Independent Learning Center (Woodland), Kennedy High School (Fremont), Lick-Wilmerding High School (San Francisco), Lowell High School (San Francisco), Mira Loma High School (Sacramento), Mission San Jose High School (Fremont), Oakland High School, Salinas High School, San Lorenzo High School, Sierra High School (Tollhouse, Calif.,) Tokay High School (Lodi).
